WEEK 3

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1              History

I key is the automatic fingerprint recognition system will be used now and can be called intelligent systems. Generally, it is defined as the systems that upgrade something that exists already. In the I-key system, fingerprint reader is used to replace the conventional key at the vehicle as a starter. This system is designed to overcome problems in the previous product.

For the past few years fingerprint scanners were considered to be a very costly and high end technology. We have seen it only in thriller and science fiction movies. But now, these devices have been popping up in almost all places like offices, cell phone and our laptops. For example, suppose you have fingerprint scanners enabled laptop. You need to visit a site which you haven’t seen for a long time. You even forgot the password, thus you need to get a new password for entering the site. These entire problems can be solved by using a password storing fingerprint reader.

2.2  Present Work

In this project, the I-key is done by using the fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader is used as the input component which read a data. In order to process the data, the microcontroller (PIC) is used as the processing mechanisms. For the display output, the motor and LED indicator are used. Each PIC has different characteristic and specification. Therefore, the PIC 16F788A is selected to use as the processor component in this project. It is because PIC 16F788A has many advantages like have many ports, high speed, large memory and other else. For output, the DC motor is used in this project. It is because in this project the motor will show the real situation.

For this project, I-key for vehicle have be upgraded from the previous design. This project attempts to overcome the problem faced by consumer. This project use a new system that can prevent the vehicle from be stolen. This system has fingerprint reader and key as an input. But if the key is duplicates by others, the vehicle cannot be start. Other else, when the vehicle needs to send to the mechanic, the principal owner can disable the fingerprint system. Then the vehicle can use key as a starter. This system also has its own power source, means when the vehicle battery is disconnect, but the system can run normally. The data stored not is lost. The data can be saved up to five pairs different fingerprint.

2.2.1  Current Microcontroller (PIC16F877A)

The Microcontroller that will be used is PIC16F877A. This microcontroller is act as the main component that will be interface with the reader in order to save or store the data from the level sensor which is will be sent to the PC to be store. The features of PIC16F877A as follows:

·         256 bytes of EEPROM data memory
·         Self programming
·         ICD (In Circuit Debugging function)
·         2 Comparators
·         8 channels of 10-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) converter
·         2 capture/compare/PWM functions
·         The synchronous serial port can be configured as either 3-wire Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI™) or the 2-wire Inter-Integrated Circuit (I²C™) bus.
·         Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (USART)

The software for PIC 16F877A can be written using
·         Assembly Language
·         C programming

2.3  Summary of Chapter

This chapter basically to open the idea from the history of the safety vehicle. So in this chapter describe the previous and present method that will be used to design and how to produce the safety system for vehicle. To explain the history used some references such as books, journals and internet. By having the information clearly explained to develop the idea to create the device that lower cost and time in people society might as well get more new knowledge to be applied in their life. This fingerprint reader can be used in any application. By applying fingerprint reader in vehicle system, the vehicle can be more safety and sophisticated. By study about these fingerprint reader, we can understand how its function and to apply it in any application.
